Three areas to choose from
The municipality of Tromsø reaches well beyond the city center. Tromsøya, Tromsdalen and Kvaløysletta are all important parts of it. For a short stay three areas matter: the center on Tromsøya, Tromsdalen across the bridge, and Kvaløya, which you reach by the connection near the airport.
Pick the area by what you plan to do. Where the tours leave from and how you get back at night matter more than the view from the room. Neither prices nor availability are listed here, and this guide has no booking links. It is an independent site, not a hotel portal or the tourist office.

The areas compared
What each one is good for.
| Area | Good for | Getting around | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| City center (Tromsøya) | Tours that leave from town, museums, walking | Many hotels are within walking distance of the Polar Museum | Pickup points differ by operator |
| Tromsdalen | The Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen | Church about 20 minutes on foot, cable car base about 45 minutes from the center | The Tromsø Bridge is closed to cars until at least late November 2026 |
| Kvaløya | Day trips west, such as Sommarøy | 10 minutes to over 1 hour, depending on the destination | Check the address and the way back at night |
Prices and availability depend on the hotel and the date, not on the area alone, so this guide does not rank the areas. Compare current offers for your dates.
Tours from Tromsø
Northern lights chases, whale trips and dog sledding from Tromsø, with live prices and availability.
The city center
Where most pickups happen.
Walking distance
The Polar Museum stands in the northern part of the center, at Søndre Tollbodgate 11, and the university says many hotels are within walking distance. Admission in 2026 is NOK 130 for adults.
Pickups
The dog sledding trips described on our dog sledding page meet 15 minutes before departure in front of the Radisson Blu. A reindeer tour meets at Prostneset, Samuel Arnesens gate 5, and the Airport Express stops at central hotels. That makes the center a good match for these departures. It does not mean every operator picks you up there.
From the airport
The airport is on the same island, a taxi ride of about 10 minutes. See the airport page for the Airport Express and the buses.
Tromsdalen
Across the bridge, below the mountain.
Sights nearby
The Arctic Cathedral, at Hans Nilsens vei 41, and the base of the Fjellheisen are both here. This gives you a location advantage for these two sights. It does not help with every evening departure.
The bridge closure
The Tromsø Bridge is closed to cars. A notice from the county dated October 16, 2026 gives November 27 as the latest reopening date. The municipality still names November 1, so no fixed date exists. Cars take the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and buses cross the bridge from 7 am to 5 pm with some cancellations. Pedestrians and cyclists can pass.
Fjellheisen works
The original viewing platform is not accessible at the moment, and wheelchairs and walkers are not carried during the building work. Parking at the base station is closed. A free replacement lot at Solstrandvegen 30 is about 5 minutes on foot. See Fjellheisen and the Arctic Cathedral.
Driving here
Anton Jakobsens veg has been one-way from south to north since January 28, 2026. The stretch between Sollivegen 7 and 10 is a foot and bike path, not a way in for cars.
Kvaløya
Space and distance.
A large area
Kvaløya is an island reached by the connection near the airport. The tourism portal gives travel times of 10 minutes to more than an hour, depending on the destination. Being near the airport does not mean short distances everywhere.
Sommarøy
Sommarøy is about an hour from the center by car. Bus line 420 runs from Tromsø through Hella and Brensholmen, but this page has no timetable or last return, so ask before you rely on it. See Sommarøy.
Darker skies
The tourism portal advises darker places outside the center for the northern lights, and tours may move the search. Choose by logistics, not by aurora odds, because clouds decide. See northern lights tours.
Which area fits your trip
A simple way to decide.
Short winter stay
The center puts most departures within walking distance. You can add the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen as separate trips across the bridge.
Church and cable car first
Tromsdalen saves the walk across the bridge, but the closure affects cars and some buses until it ends.
Car and beaches
Kvaløya suits a trip by car. Check the exact address and how you will get back after dark.
If you plan to stay further out, Lyngen covers places to sleep in the Lyngen Alps, and North Norway gives the wider region.
Where to stay in Tromsø: frequently asked questions
Which area is best for a first visit?
The center suits most first visits, since many tours leave from town and the Polar Museum is in walking distance of many hotels. Your plans decide, so see the table above.
Is Tromsdalen a good base?
It is next to the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen. The Tromsø Bridge is closed to cars until at least late November 2026, and the center is 20 to 45 minutes away on foot.
Is Kvaløya cheaper?
Not necessarily. Prices depend on the hotel and the date, so compare current offers for your dates. Do not pick an area for better aurora odds, because clouds decide.
Do I need a car?
Not in the center, where many tours leave from town and the airport is a taxi ride of about 10 minutes away. A car helps on Kvaløya, where distances run from 10 minutes to over an hour.
Can I walk to the Arctic Cathedral?
Yes. The church gives about 20 minutes on foot over the bridge from the center, and pedestrians can pass the closure. Check the bus plan if you go by bus.
Does this page list hotels?
No. It compares areas only, with no hotel names, no room prices and no booking links.
